Emerging science may appoint Vitamin D as the nutrient of the year maybe even of the decade. Researchers have discovered Vitamin D receptors in most tissues and cells in the body. Studies suggest that Vitamin D is vital to the health of a large variety of the body systems. Studies suggest Vitamin D plays an important role in reducing the risk of a host of illnesses, notably, osteoporosis, and possibly certain cancers and autoimmune infections, and cardiovascular diseases.
Wow that sounds really great! But unfortunately blood levels of Vitamin D have been dropping over the past decade. A recent study shows that 77 percent of Americans have insufficient amounts of Vitamin D. In the past people depended on the sun for Vitamin D. What is different? Maybe it is all the sun screen and hats that keep us from getting enough sun or maybe it is the fact that too many Americans are severely overweight (fat holds onto Vitamin D) making it unavailable to the body or maybe it is because we consume less dairy products fortified with Vitamin D. Whatever the reason most Americans are Vitamin D deficient. There are still a lot of unanswered questions but somehow we need to increase our intake of Vitamin D.
Calcium With Vit D
The RDA for Vitamin D is too low. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends between 800-1000 IU of Vitamin D. Most experts seem to agree with this level. It may need to be higher for certain conditions. You are not going to get enough from taking walks or short-term gardening. Late afternoon or early morning sun is generally not intense enough to stimulate the skin to produce Vitamin D. You also are not likely to get enough from food. There are not enough real sources in food even in fortified processed food. The answer seems depend on supplementation. You need to find a good vitamin mineral supplement such as Nutridone that has been fortified with Vitamin D.
There are some areas that research shows that the bone building minerals calcium and phosphorus rely on Vitamin D for absorption. Muscles have Vitamin D receptors and research deficiencies in Vitamin D decreases muscular strength and performance. Studies suggest that Vitamin D plays a role in the immune system and that deficiencies can weaken the body's response to infection. The brain has receptors for Vitamin D and it may be important for brain development as well as maintaining mental function as you age. As you can see from the research Vitamin D there seems to be good reason to increase the intake of Vitamin D to at least 800 IU and maybe it is the nutrient of the decade as some have purported. It at least needs to be on your "I've got to try list".
